Abel Sanchez: I see Stevens running from Golovkin

“We all know that to see full GGG abilities, we have to put him in front of better and better fighters. I think that Stevens is a very dangerous fighter with a big punch and the best opponent willing to get in the ring with Gennady for this fight in MSG. But I also believe that it will be easier fight for Gennady than Macklin fight in June,” said trainer Abel Sanchez in a Fightnews.com interview. The always outspoken trainer of WBA/IBO middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (27-0, 24 KOs) is also not convinced that challenger Curtis Stevens (25-3, 18 KO) will stick to his “let’s knock him out” plan.

“He can’t,” says Sanchez. A couple of body punches, he feels Golovkin power and it will be holding and grabbing and running tactics. This is how I see this fight: Stevens running from Golovkin!”
Most of the fighters, if not all of them, are talking about outsmarting Gennady Golovkin. No one wants to just stand in front of him and trade punches. Curtis Stevens’ plan looks different…
Abel Sanchez: …and you believe him?
Seeing more than a couple of his fights live, spending some time with Stevens in his gym, the tactics summarized in his own words as “I’m going to decapitate his ass” sound plausible.
AS: I don’t believe it will happen like that. I don’t believe it at all. Stevens is just giving himself confidence. This is what he thinks he can do against Gennady. But he can’t. A couple of body punches, he feels Golovkin power and it will be holding and grabbing, running tactics. This is how I see this fight: Stevens running from Golovkin.
ggg_team300So you will be surprised if Curtis steps into the ring at Madison Square Garden with a proverbial guns blazing attitude. And assuming he would…
AS: I wish it would happen like you’re saying. Then, on November 2 in New York City, you and everybody else would see a great fight. With the same ending – Curtis on his back – but with a lot of excitement. My option will end with the same conclusion, maybe couple rounds later.
In various interviews, the number of rounds you predict Stevens will be able to stay upright varies from three to five – depending on what you’ll see from Curtis. What about Gennady?
AS: He knows what to do. He has 350 amateur fights, 24 KOs in 27 fights. I have a couple of good fighters in camp, but when I teach my fighters, especially when I teach Gennady, I’m concentrating on what they should do. Paying no special attention what the other guy’s plan is. And we are not taking Stevens lightly – we are not. I’m always saying this, but this is still the truth: if you or other reporters would be able to see what this guy could do in the gym… He’s unbelievable.
Tom Loeffler, K2 managing director and Gennady promoter is convinced that every Golovkin fight will be a better one. What else can he do? Knock people out in even more spectacular way that he did to Matthew Macklin?
AS: We all know that to see full GGG abilities, we have to put him in front of better and better fighters. I think that Stevens is a very dangerous fighter with a big punch and the best opponent willing to get in the ring with Gennady for this fight in MSG. But I also believe that it will be easier fight for Gennady than Macklin fight in June. I’m waiting for everybody to see what Gennady will do to people with names like Sergio Martinez, Julio Cesar Chavez Junior, Carl Froch, Andre Ward or even Floyd Mayweather Junior. But we will start with Curtis Stevens, hitting New York for fightweek activities and then on Saturday it’s Madison Square Garden and HBO. And Curtis Stevens.

The Golovkin-Stevens world championship fight from Madison Square Garden Theater will happen on November 2 and will be televised live by HBO.
