Heavyweight Anthony Joshua made his pro debut in the same city where he won Olympic gold, scoring a first round TKO in front of an excited crowd.
As expected, 2012 gold medalist Anthony Joshua had an easy pro debut today in London, stopping Italy's Emanuele Leo in the first round of a one-sided fight.
Joshua (1-0, 1 KO) had originally intended to defend his medal in Rio in 2016, but decided to turn pro earlier this year, signing with Matchroom Boxing. He was the headline attraction in his debut at the O2 Arena, and though he looked a little stiff (and possibly a bit taken by the moment), he was too heavy-handed and too quick for the opponent. Leo fell to 8-1 (3 KO).
Joshua, who turns 24 on October 15, is slated to return on the Brook-Senchenko card on October 26 in Sheffield, and again on November 23 in Manchester on the Froch-Groves bill. So he'll be closing out 2013 with a run of fights as scheduled barring injury before likely taking the holiday break most fighters go with, and then getting back into the ring in 2014.
