A decade later, Spadafora takes aim at another world title belt

Saturday night at the Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort in Chester, West Virginia, unbeaten former IBF lightweight champion Paul Spadafora attempts to grab another portion of a world title.

The interim WBA light welterweight belt will be on the line as the 38-year-old #4 ranked Spadafora (48-0-1, 19 KOs) takes on #3 ranked Johan Perez (17-1-1, 12 KOs). Spadafora’s first title reign ended more than a decade ago when he gave up the title to move up in weight.

“I’m really focused and have been training hard for the last seven weeks and I’m ready to go,” said the Pittsburgh native. He has a tough opponent in the lanky Perez whose only defeat was a close technical seven-round decision to Pablo Cesar Cano last year.

Spadafora is grateful for the chance for another title, “I appreciate the opportunity for this fight. I want to enjoy the moment especially after coming back from the worst times I have ever been in my life.” Spadafora is 3-0 since his latest comeback a little over a year ago with all three bouts at the Mountaineer.

The undercard will feature five other undefeated fighters, Wilkins Santaigo (9-0), Morgan Fitch (11-0), Antonio Nieves (4-0), Dustin Echard (7-0) and Mike Snider (1-0-1). Promoter: Roy Jones, Jr., Golden Boy. Tickets: $100, $50, $35, $25
