Hughie Fury defeats Dorian Darch

British heavyweight prospect Hughie Fury (10-0, 6 KO’s) kept his unbeaten record intact with a 6 round unanimous decision win over Dorian Darch (7-2, 1 KO’s) at the York Hall, Bethnal Green, in London, United Kingdom. It was scored 60-54 for the 19-year-old Fury.

Fury, the cousin of heavyweight contender Tyson Fury, was able to use his jab to spear the much shorter and a lot older 29-year-old Darch. It wasn’t much of a fight because Darch was too short, too slow and too weak to make it a competitive affair.

We didn’t learn much from the fight other than Fury’s right hand power wasn’t impressive enough to do any damage to Darch.
What I found troubling is that Darch was blasted out by British heavyweight Ian Lewison in 4 rounds last December, and yet Hughie couldn’t even dent Darch’s chin. Lewison isn’t a big puncher, yet he was able to smash Darch to get him out of there. Lewison was battering Darch the entire fight. In contrast, Hughie’s punches were bouncing off of Darch without having any effect on him whatsoever.

Hughie, 6’6″, is going to have to focus on his defense more if he wants to someday capture a world title, because he doesn’t have the power or the offensive skills to compete agaisnt the best heavyweights in the division. We’re seeing that now with Fury not even able to stop a 3rd tier heavyweight like Darch.

It’s not that Fury wasn’t trying hard to get Darch out of there tonight. He tried unloading everything but the kitchen sink on him, but like his better known cousin, Hughie could only slap with his punches due to his lack of power.

I’m not sure how realistic it is to hope that Hughie will someday develop punching power in the future after he goes on a long weight regimen, but that’s something he’s going to need to try. Fury needs to develop his upper body strength something fierce if he wants to go somewhere in the heavyweight division.
This is the type of opponent that Fury is supposed to be able to stop if he wants to be considered as a future contender or champion in the division.
