Fonfara stops Campillo ko 9 round -- Szpilka win Mollo TKO 5vround

Polish light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara (24-2, 14 KO’s) stopped former WBA World light heavyweight champion Gabriel Campillo (22-6-1, 9 KO’s) in the 9th round on Friday night at the U.S.

Cellular Field, in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Fonfara dropped a tired and hurt Campillo in the 9th with a right hand. Referee Genaro Rodriguez then halted the round at 1:37 of the round when it was clear that Campillo was too hurt to continue.

Fonfara, #4 WBO, #4 IBF, #7 WBC, staggered Campillo in the 8th round with a right to the jaw late in the round. Campillo never saw the punch coming, and he was badly hurt.

However, the round ended before Fonfara could attempt to finish Campillo off. Despite getting the win, Fonfara did not look good at all. When he was backed up by Campillo, he would cover up and take head shots until Campillo would stop punching.

A good young light heavyweight with power would have wrecked Fonfara’s world tonight. Someone like Sergey Kovalev would have easy work of Fonfara, and it would have likely been over by the 4th round at best. Fonfara’s is doing a good job of matching him against older fighters to build up his rankings, but when he does eventually face a good fighter that’s not past his prime, I don’t see Fonfara winning.

He’s too average, lacks power, and can’t fight going backwards at all. *** In heavyweight action, Polish heavyweight Artur Szpilka (16-0, 12 KO’s) stayed unbeaten with a 5th round stoppage win over Mike Mollo (20-5-1, 12 KO’s). Szpilka, 24, dropped the 33-year-old Mollo in the 5th round with a hard left hand that sent Mollo down hard on the canvas.

Referee Gerald Scott then stopped the fight at 1:41 of the round. In the 3rd round, Mollo knocked Szpilka with a hard left hand to the head. All in all, it was a good fight between two 2nd tier heavyweights.

Szpilka won, but he looked badly flawed and not much better than Mollo. I can’t see Szpilka anywhere in the division. He’s too easy to hit, too slow, and he gets hurt too easily

. I wouldn’t mind seeing an all Polish match-up between him and Tomasz Adamek, but that’s about all I can see Szpilka accomplishing. You put him in with a good heavyweight contender, and he’ll get knocked out easily from what I can see. Other action on the card: Adrian Granados TKO 6 Mark Salser
