While few are giving Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-0-1, 30 KO) any type of chance to dethrone Floyd Mayweather (44-0, 26 KO) on September 14 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, former world heavyweight champion and hall of famer George Foreman believes Canelo has a great shot at beating Mayweather.
Foreman appeared on ATG Radio and discussed the upcoming super-fight.
“Alvarez, this is his fight to lose. I’ll put it to you like this – he’s younger, he’s a harder puncher, he has a greater future, he has nothing to lose. He can win this fight. Mayweather on the other hand can’t hurt anybody. So, the other guy has no chance of being hurt. The only fella that Mayweather ever hurt was his own hand, Mayweather’s right hand. He’s no danger in hurting Alvarez. Alvarez can punch. If he paces himself, he can knock [Mayweather out] by the ninth round. This is a competitive fight, unheard of – a great fighter with so much potential to take on such an experienced fighter like Mayweather,” Foreman said.
Not only does Foreman think Alvarez can win, it sounds like he expects him to win. He does bring up some good points. Mayweather has never really displayed much power since moving to 147 or the few fights he has had at 154. The bigger factor for Canelo has to be his stamina, or lack thereof, that he displayed in his most recent fight against Austin Trout. If Alvarez hoping to knock Mayweather out in the later rounds like Foreman suggests, he will need work on his endurance and like Foreman said, pace himself.
