Main Events is looking into the possibility of matching their top two heavyweights on HBO in November, with both sides said to be interested in the fight.
A potential heavyweight clash between veteran Tomasz Adamek and rising contender Bryant Jennings is being discussed for November on an HBO date, according to Russell Peltz, the matchmaker who has worked on Main Events' NBC Sports Fight Night Series.
Peltz tells BoxingScene.com that at the moment the sides are "just talking," but he says that both sides want to do the fight. One assumes that this fight would be put on the same bill as a potential Gennady Golovkin vs Curtis Stevens clash, as Golovkin has a November return date on the network. Adamek-Jennings would indeed be a fine co-feature bout.
Adamek (49-2, 28 KO) cruised past Dominick Guinn last night in Connecticut, but Jennings (17-0, 9 KO) is a whole other ball of wax. Jennings is young, fresh, and unbeaten, unlike the 38-year-old Guinn, who was mentally and physically just surviving after the first few rounds, as is generally the case when he faces good opponents the last, oh, seven or eight years or whatever. Jennings last fought on June 14, beating Andrey Fedosov.
Hopefully, this comes together. It's a really good fight and both Adamek and Jennings could use this sort of fight and victory to take that next step toward the world title shot they're both seeking. Don't ignore at all that this would be a big-time step up for Jennings to go along with this being a real live body for Adamek, which is something he's had trouble with of late. Questions would be answered with this matchup.
I do think it's kind of sad that these two have basically built to this fight, in many ways, on NBC Sports, but if it's going to happen, it would go to HBO. I get it, and I don't blame Main Events at all for being realistic about money and exposure and what means more, but it's a nice reality check for what the Fight Night series really is. It's a building platform, and the good news is, it's one that has worked and been handled well.
