Golovkin’s promoter makes offer to Curtis Stevens

K2 promoter Tom Loeffler has reportedly made an offer to #6 IBF, #10 WBC, Curtis Stevens (25-3, 18 KO’s) to try and get him for a fight against WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24 KO’s) on HBO.

Loeffler said to RingTV “We’ve made an offer to Stevens but we haven’t gotten anything finalized.” Loeffler was hoping that #1 WBA Martin Murray would say yes to the fight, but he’s still dealing with visa problems, and there’s no guarantee that he’s going to have those problems taken care of before November.

That’s when Golovkin wants to fight next. With there being no certainty that Murray will be able to get his visa to travel to America to face Golovkin, Team Golovkin will have to pick an opponent that will be more of a sure thing for him to fight like Stevens.

Stevens, 28, wasn’t doing much with his career until recently when he moved down in weight to the middleweight division from the super middleweight division. At 168, the 5’7” Stevens was too small, and he found himself getting out-boxed by bigger fighters in that division like Andre Dirrell and Jess Brinkley.

Had Stevens chosen to stay at that weight, his chances of success there were extremely limited due to his lack of size. However, since moving down to 160 in March of last year, Stevens has stopped three out of his four opponents faced in this division with all three knockouts coming in the 1st round.

The only guy that was able to go the distance with him was the tough Derrick Findley, who gave Stevens a lot of problems in losing by an 8 round unanimous decision last April.

While Stevens’ promoter Kathy Duva considers the offer, Loeffler will be speaking with HBO to find out who they prefer for Golovkin to fight. HBO might say Murray, but even if they, it’s still not likely to happen if Murray can’t get his visa problems straightened out in the next few weeks.

K2 needs to arrange Golovkin’s next fight right now, because you still need time to promote the fight.
